Unexpected Brazil - Piauí

Piauí is a state in Brazil’s arid Northeast. Arid? Brazil? Well, yeah, the unexpected Brazil.

Piauí is colorful, diverse and welcoming.

The Homem Americano National Park, located in São Raimundo Nonato, is the archeological site with the biggest concentration of cave paintings in the world.

The huge Parnaguá Lake, seen here at sunset, on the state’s southern tip was a key location during the early settlement of the state. Settlers coming from the South used this lake as a hub point as they pushed their way north through this harsh environments. The strategic location of this lake was key in the state’s settlement, being Piauí the only Brazilian state that wasn’t settled from the ocean towards the backcountry.

Adobe houses, as simple as they seem, are built neatly, as a sign of the skills of the hard working people of Piauí.

Piauí is a land of contrasts. If you have a chance, visit it. If you don’t have the chance, create the chance!
